Best Practices for Coin Conservation and Storage

Proper storage and handling are critical for preserving the condition and value of your coins. Here are essential best practices every collector should follow:

Handling:

Always hold coins by their edges. Never touch the obverse or reverse surfaces. Use cotton or nitrile gloves when handling valuable coins.

Storage:

Store coins in inert materials. IGA-certified coins are sealed in tamper-evident holders that provide optimal protection. For raw coins, use acid-free cardboard holders, Mylar flips, or hard plastic capsules.

Environment:

Keep your collection in a stable, low-humidity environment. Avoid extreme temperatures and rapid temperature changes, which can cause condensation.

Cleaning:

Never clean your coins. Cleaning removes the natural patina and surface that developed over time, and it can significantly reduce a coin's value and grade. If you believe your coin needs conservation, consult a professional.

Insurance:

Document and insure your collection. Photograph each coin and keep records of purchases, grades, and estimated values.

At IGA, our encapsulation provides long-term protection for your certified coins, preserving their condition for generations.
